Southampton, NYThe U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills
No club is more tied to the U.S. Open than Shinnecock Hills. A founding member of the USGA, it hosted the second U.S. Open in 1896 and is the only club to stage the championship in three centuries. Here's the full story, plus how to plan for the next one.
2026 recap: Clark goes wire-to-wire
Wyndham Clark led the 126th U.S. Open from the first round and held on through a tense Sunday on June 21, 2026. Starting the final round six shots clear, he closed with a 73 and finished at 4-under 276, one ahead of Sam Burns, who charged with a final-round 67. Scottie Scheffler, chasing the career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday, tied for fourth at even par.
The win was Clark's second U.S. Open in four years (he also won in 2023 at Los Angeles Country Club), and he was the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open champion since Martin Kaymer in 2014. A partisan gallery made Sunday memorable for the wrong reasons, with fans ejected for heckling.

Next up: the 2036 double Open
The USGA has awarded Shinnecock Hills both the 2036 U.S. Open and the 2036 U.S. Women's Open, to be played in back-to-back weeks. It will be Shinnecock's seventh U.S. Open, 140 years after the first, and its first U.S. Women's Open, fitting for the first club in America to admit women as members. Exact dates haven't been announced. Only Pinehurst No. 2 (2014, and again in 2029) has hosted the double before.

Getting there
Southampton traffic during championship week is notorious. Past U.S. Opens have relied on remote parking with shuttles and on the LIRR to Southampton; check the USGA's spectator guide for the year you attend. See getting to the Hamptons for train, Jitney, car and air options.
Where to stay
Hotels from Westhampton to Montauk and across the North Fork book up early in an Open year, and summer-rental houses are the usual alternative. See where to stay.
While you're here
Play a public course the same week: Montauk Downs, Poxabogue or Sag Harbor. Bring sun protection; the course has almost no shade.
