The 126th U.S. Open returned to Shinnecock Hills in June 2026, and it delivered exactly what Shinnecock always seems to deliver: a punishing test, a final day full of tension, and a champion who had to survive the course as much as the field. Here's how Wyndham Clark won, and what it means for the club's next Open in 2036.

The result

Wyndham Clark won on Sunday, June 21, 2026, finishing at 4-under-par 276, one shot ahead of Sam Burns. It was Clark's second U.S. Open title in four years, after his 2023 win at Los Angeles Country Club, and it put him in an exclusive group of multiple U.S. Open champions.

Wire-to-wire, but not easy

Clark led after every round, the first wire-to-wire U.S. Open winner since Martin Kaymer at Pinehurst in 2014. He took a six-shot lead into Sunday, which sounds comfortable until you remember where he was playing. Shinnecock's firm, windswept turf and exposed greens have humbled leaders before.

A wayward drive into the fescue on the par-5 16th opened the door, and Burns, who holed a 50-foot putt on the 8th during his charge, pushed him to the final hole. Clark closed with a 73, the highest final round by a U.S. Open champion in more than 15 years, and secured the win with a two-putt par on the 72nd hole. Commentators pointed to his scrambling all week as the difference.

The crowd

Sunday at Shinnecock also made headlines for the gallery. Clark was paired with Scheffler, who was trying to complete the career Grand Slam on his 30th birthday, and much of the crowd openly pulled for Scheffler. Several fans were ejected for heckling Clark. It was an unusually hostile atmosphere for a U.S. Open, and Clark won many people over by holding his nerve through it.

Where 2026 fits in Shinnecock history

Shinnecock has now hosted six U.S. Opens, and each one has left a story:

  • 1896: James Foulis won the second U.S. Open; John Shippen became the first African-American to compete in a major.
  • 1986: Raymond Floyd won at 43.
  • 1995: Corey Pavin won the 100th U.S. Open.
  • 2004: Retief Goosen survived greens that became nearly unplayable.
  • 2018: Brooks Koepka won back-to-back Opens.
  • 2026: Wyndham Clark went wire-to-wire.

Next: the 2036 double Open

The USGA has awarded Shinnecock both the 2036 U.S. Open and the 2036 U.S. Women's Open, to be played in back-to-back weeks. It will be Shinnecock's seventh U.S. Open, 140 years after its first, and the club's first U.S. Women's Open. Dates haven't been announced yet.

If you're planning to attend, buy tickets from the official USGA site when sales open. Closer to the event, resale marketplaces such as StubHub and SeatGeek list seats; compare prices and buyer guarantees. Hotels book up early in an Open year, so lock in a room or a house on Booking.com well ahead.
